Utpanna Ekadashi - 20th Nov 2022

Utpanna Ekadashi also known as Utpatti Ekadash is celebrated on the 11th of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik. It is the first ekadashi that comes after Kartik Purnima. The glorification of this Ekadashi is mentioned in Bhawishya Uttar Puran. Devotees do not partake of any food from the previous day. The devotees fast on the Ekadashi and offer fruits as prasadam to Lord Vishnu.
Utpanna Ekadashi fasts denote fasting for the three main deities of Hinduism – Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara.

According to the legend, in ancient times, there was a demon called Mur who fought for 10,000 years with Lord Vishnu. So, to take some respite from the war, Lord Vishnu went to rest in a cave. When Lord was in yoga nidra, Mur tried to attack him suddenly a Goddess appeared from the body of Lord Vishnu and killed Mur. It also marks the birth of Ekadashi Mata as she was born on this day.

As the goddess appeared on Ekadashi, the Ekadashi became Utpanna Ekadashi.

It is believed offering prayers to Lord Vishnu on Ekadashi gives immense blessings of Lord Vishnu to the devotees.

This year Utpanna Ekadashi falls on November 20 Sunday.

Also if one wants to opt for a long monthly Ekadashi fast, they need to start from this Ekadasi. They can continue for a year or a longer period.

I am starting my journey of ekadashi fasting this year….You may wish me luck!
