Tulsi Vivah falls on the 11th day of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik. It is one of the most auspicious days for the Hindu community. The festival begins on Dev Prabodhni Ekadashi and goes till the full moon of the month of Kartik.
The festival begins with a day-long fast. According to the legend, in ancient times, a monster named Jalandhar became very powerful due to the austerities of his wife Vrinda. To defeat the monster, it became mandatory to corrupt his wife. Lord Vishnu visited Vrinda in the form of her husband and corrupted her. This eventually killed the demon in the battle. When came to know about it she cursed Lord Vishnu to become a heartless rock. Lord Vishnu became Shaligram. And Vrinda sacrificed herself on the pyre of her husband. After her death, a tulsi plant appeared where she sacrificed herself. Lord Vishnu married that plant in the form of Shaligram and the ritual of Tulsi Vivah started.
On this day, in the evening, the devotees adore the goddess Tulsi with red clothes, 16 shringar and jewellery. Lord Vishnu weds Goddess Tulsi as Shaligram. The Shaligram is adorned with new clothes. A canopy or mandap of sugarcane is prepared. The devotees arrive as guests from both sides. All the folk songs of marriage are sung whilst enjoying the festivities.
Women of all ages can observe this fast. After the wedding is over, prasadam is distributed amongst the devotees.
This year Tulsi Vivah will be celebrated on Saturday, November 5th.
