Sharad Purnima also known as Kojagiri Purnima and Raas Purnima or Dev Diwali, is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin. It marks the end of the monsoon season.
Different parts of India, celebrate it differently. In the eastern parts of India, WB, Assam, and Odisha, this day is dedicated to the worshipping of Lakshmi Puja. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped with various delicacies and seasonal fruits. The homes are decorated with rangoli which is very dear to Maa Lakshmi.
In Vrindavan, this day is celebrated as Raas Purnima when Lord Krishna dances or creates Raas with his divine consorts. Total privacy is provided in Vrindavan and no devotee is allowed to stay after the moon rises.
In western India, Maharashtra, Kojagari Purnima is celebrated as a community festival. People gather together and prepare masala milk in a big pot. The milk has numerous dry fruits and spices added to it. The pot is kept under the moonlight. After the reflection of the moon is seen in the milk, everyone savours it to receive the blessings of the moon and Goddess Lakshmi.. People do not sleep at night and enjoy the company of their loved ones.
Most people prepare kheer on this day and keep it under the moonlight. They consume it the next day. Many people also observe fast on this day.
Some people also observe it as Dev Diwali which means the Diwali of Gods. People go to temples to light diyas to celebrate the Diwali of Gods. It is said that those who celebrate Diwali with God are blessed with all sorts of wealth in life.
This purnima is also celebrated as Kartik or Kumara Purnima. On this day lord Kartik is worshipped to gain the boon of a child.
It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi comes to the mortal realm to bless the earthlings and worshipping her bestows us with prosperity.
The Sikh people celebrate it as the birthday of their first Guru Nanak. They call it Prakash Parv and light up gurudwaras with diyas and lights.
This year Sharad Purnima falls on 9th October.
