Parivartini Ekadashi is celebrated on Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Mythologically, it is believed that Lord Vishnu took his first turn on this day while sleeping in the Yoga Nidra of Chaturmas. The word “Parivartan” literally means ‘change’, hence this day is marked as a symbol of change in Hindu calendar. In some places, Parivartini Ekadashi is considered to be the birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu's Vamana avatar, the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu in human form. Hence, the Vamana form of Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day with full dedication.
Whoever observes the Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat is likely to get blessings from Lord Vishnu. It is said that keeping Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat is equivalent to the fruit of Vajpayee Yagna.
On this day, Vamana, Lord Vishnu's avatar, is highly worshipped. Fasting on this day brings name and fame, and all desires are fulfilled. Also, by keeping this fast, one attains salvation (Moksha). Anyone who follows this fast may get rid of sins and wrong deeds in theirin their life. Goddess Lakshmi - the wife of Lord Vishnu and the deity of wealth and prosperity also blesses people who keep this fast.
A person must wake up early in the morning and clean the area around the home temple. Get ready by taking bath and wearing neat and tidy clothes. Worship the idol of Vishnu with Gangajal or holy water and light up diyas and incense sticks. Begin your one-day fast by completing aarti, recite the Vishnu mantra and remember the lord in your prayers. End the fast on Dwadashi Tithi, the next day. Donate foods to Brahmins and also distribute prasad among people.
