;
Makar Sankranti, one of the important PAN India festivals, falls every year in Mid-January. This year also, it is celebrated on '15th January 2023.'
This festival marks the transition of the Sun from 'Dhanu (Sagittarius) Rashi' to 'Makar (Capricorn) Rashi'. Because the Sun is considered to move from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere, this whole day is dedicated to Lord Surya and his worship.
Surya Dev is the symbol of light and it takes us from darkness towards light, hence this day is believed to be very auspicious as per Hindu culture.
This movement of the Sun marks the end of winter i.e. nature brings the warmer winds of spring with it, the days become longer and the nights shorter.
This auspicious occasion is known by the name 'Uttarayan' in the state of Gujarat, India (as the Sun starts its journey towards the Northern direction (Uttar Disha). This day is also believed to be the positive time as Lord Sun visits his son’s house , Lord Shani (Makar rashi is owned by Lord Shani), hence, Makar Sankranti marks the unbreakable bond between a father and his son. It is also known by different names in different states such as Maghi in Punjab, Sakrat in Haryana, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, etc.
Also, the epic of Mahabharata states that Bhishma, the supreme commander of the army of Kauravas, waited for the Uttarayan period to embrace his final death after Pandavas killed him.
On this festive occasion, a great pomp and joy is all over the country and devotees bathe in the authentic Indian rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, and many more to absolve them from all their sins. Many spiritual acts as well as International Kite flying competitions are also held at many places across the country. The sharing of sweets such as laddu, chikki made of til (sesame), peanuts and jaggery amongst the people is considered to be an act of unity, peace, and harmony.
Happy Makar Sankranti to you & your family!
Have a festive day!!
