Ganesh Jayanti
As it is Ganesh Jayanti, Maaghi Ganpati, let me share few things which my mother taught me about our favourite Bappa:
Lord Ganesha, also known as Vignaharata is popularly worshipped to remove obstacles. However, traditionally it is believed he also places obstacles in the path of those who need to be evaluated. Hence, it is advised to worshipped Ganpati bappa before one begins anything new.
Ganesha is associated with the Hindu mantra ‘OM’. The term ‘Omkaraswarupa’, refers to the fact that he impersonated the primal sound. The same has been attested in the Ganapati Atharvashirsa.
Lord Ganesha is an embodiment of wisdom and bliss. The concept of buddhi is associated with him. Wearing the head of an elephant indicates the symbol of Gyana, the discriminating intellect that one must have to lead a life of perfection
Lord Ganesha rules the Muladhara (Mula means original and adhara means the base) chakra which is the foundation on which the rest of the human organism is built up. The association of the same is mentioned in the Ganapati Atharvashirsa. He is the one who governs the forces that propel our Wheel of life. Lord Ganesha is associated with Prithvi Tatva.
The mouse which is Ganesha’s vaahan represents ego. It is believed, the one who is humble is always close to him. His large ears symbolises that he always listens to his devotees.
Sharing one of my favourite shlokas of his, which I recite every morning since my childhood:
“Vakra Tunda Mahakaaya Surya Koti Samaprabha,
Nirvignam Kurume Deva Sarva Kaaryeshu Sarvataa”
