LOHRI

Lohri, one of the most famous North Indian winter festivals, falls in the month of Paush, i.e., January, and is mostly celebrated by Sikhs & Hindus.

Every year, it falls on the 13th of January. It marks the end of winter and harvesting of rabi crops by the farmers.

This year Lohri is on 14th January 2023, and the Puja time is at 8:57 PM as per drik panchang.

On this day, the sun and the fire are worshiped to thank them for the good harvest. Generally, first Lohri is considered most auspicious for new brides and newborn babies because it marks fertility.

An interesting legend behind this holy day of Loi Mata is:

During the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, there was a zamindar whose son, Dulla Bhatti, the Robin Hood of Punjab, upset with the injustice of the king with the poor, waged Guerrilla warfare against him & also refused to accept his legitimacy & extra taxes to be paid. He robbed from the rich to distribute among the poor. Also, he led a rebellion against the slave market of the Middle East where Hindu Punjabi girls were taken forcibly to be sold & rescued them. Hence, he became a very popular legendary hero of Punjab. Among those girls, two were Sundari & Mundari, which became a Punjabi folklore afterwards. And, because of his bravery, children started singing the traditional songs of Lohri with 'Dulla Bhatti' name involved in them.

The enthusiasm and zeal of Lohri gets enhanced due to the lighting of huge bonfires in the yards and worshiping the small idols of Lohri goddess made up of cattle dung by donning traditional attires, circling, and throwing sesame seeds, rewaries, and jaggery in it.

Sugarcane made products such as gajak, rewari, etc., and peanuts, til, makka phulli are distributed among people as Prasad. At night, the delicious Makki ki roti & Sarson ka saag is served.

May Lord Agni bless you and your family with warmth, happiness and prosperity.Happy Lohri!
