Karwa Chauth is one of the biggest festivals in North India. It is observed by married ladies for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands. On this day, married women observe a day-long fast until the moonrise for the protection of their spouse and also for a happy and fulfilling married life. Unmarried women also observe the fast to get the desired partner.
The day-long festival is observed with a lot of pomp and show especially by newly married couples. Karwa Chauth is the celebration of the bond between husband and wife.
Karwa means a small earthen pitcher and Chauth means the 4th of the month. As per the Hindu Vedic calendar, it falls on the Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. The fasting starts with taking a bath before sunrise which is followed by the ritual of receipt of Sargi from the elders of the family, which needs to be consumed before sunrise. Sargi includes sweets, dry fruits, snacks etc.
The fastings start from sunrise and last till the moon rises. Women who observe fast are not allowed to take food or water till the moon rises.
This year Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on Thursday, 13th Oct 2022.
Puja Muhurat: 6.14 pm to 7.27 pm
Duration: 1 hour 13mins
Upavasa (Fasting) Time: 6.28 am to 8.45 pm
Moonrise is at 8.45 pm
The deity of the day is Chauth Mata or Shiva-Parvati in some traditions.
The fasting ends with worshipping the Moon God and then worshipping the husband. The women offer gifts or Beya to their mother-in-law to express their gratitude.
Nowadays men are also observing Karwa Chauth which has made this celebration even sweeter.
All in all, this is a celebration of the love and bond of husband and wife.
They are not allowed to sleep, stitch clothes, or touch scissors and needles, during the fasting. Also wearing black, navy blue or white colour clothes is considered inauspicious.
