Ganesha Jayanti

"Ganesha Jayanti"

Ganesha Jayanti, the holy festival of Lord Ganesha, falls every year in the Magha lunar month. Today at 15.23 (IST), the tithi changed from Tritiya to Chaturthi, hence this year, we celebrate Ganesh Jayanti on '24th & 25th Jan. 2023.'

It is the birthday of Sankat Harta, one of the two sons of Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati. And, as it lies in the Magha month of Hindu calendar, it is also known as 'Maghi Ganesh Jayanti.' It is also called by different names across India, for example, Maghi Ganpati, Magha Shukla Chaturthi, Varad Chaturthi, Tilkund Chaturthi and many more.

According to the traditional Marathi Hindu lunar calendar, Ganesha Jayanti lies on the 4th day during the moon's waxing phase (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Magh.

This occasion is prominently commemorated in the state of Maharashtra and also in some parts of Goa. The well-known temples of Shri Ganesha such as Siddhivinayak Temple, Moreshwar temple, etc. are decorated and visited by thousands of people. On this day, an idol of Lord Vinayaka, made up of turmeric paste or sindoor powder, and sometimes cow dung is worshiped.
The use of sesame seeds is an important aspect of Ganesha Jayanti, hence there is a distribution of til laddus as Prasad to the devotees. People take bath with water mixed with til seeds and a full-day fast is also observed by many followed by feasting in the night time by consumption of Prasadam. It is believed that fasting on this day enhances the name and fame of the individual bringing goodluck, prosperity and fortune.

On this day, red clothes and sweets are also offered to the Vighnaharta Shri Ganesha to spark the lives of the devotees with enlightenment.

Warm Wishes on Ganesha Jayanti!
