Diwali Padwa or Diwalicha Padwa is an important festival in Maharashtra. It is celebrated on the Pratipada of the waxing phases of Kartik Month. It falls on the next day of Kartik Amavasya.
The festival is celebrated to rejoice the return of the demon King Mahabali on earth. According to the legends, Mahabali was a demon king who was the grandson of Prahlad. Both Prahlad and Mahabali were great devotees of Lord Vishnu. After Mahabali became the King of Trilok, he swelled with pride. He became invincible and people pleaded Lord Vishnu to save them from his might. In Vaman Avatar Lord Vishnu broke his ego by sending King Mahabali or Bali to the underworld. After witnessing this event Prahlad, seeked mercy for his grandson as King Mahabali loved his praja like his own children. So, Lord Vishnu let him visit his praja for one day. Since then, it is believed that King Bali comes to visit Bhulok for one day and it is celebrated as Diwali Padwa.
The day is celebrated as a way to meet and rejoice with the near and dear ones. On this day, wives give aukshan to their husbands and husbands give gifts to their spouses. It is also the beginning of Vikram Samvat or the Hindu new year.
People start new accounts on this day. Exchange of sweets and gifts is another way to socialise on this day.
This year Diwali Padwa is falling on October 26th. In some parts of India, Diwali padwa is celebrated as Govardhan Puja and Annakut or Shastra Puja. However, it is considered an auspicious day throughout India.
