Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi is an eminent Hindu festival which falls on the 13th lunar day of the waning moon or Krishna paksha of the Hindu month of Kartik.
The word Dhan means wealth and teras means 13th. It is believed that buying utensils, jewellery and brooms on dhanteras bring good luck and wealth. It also marks the beginning of the Diwali festivities.
The festival has many mythological stories attached to it but chiefly there are two stories that are very popular. According to one belief Lord Dhanvantri who is the God of medicine and good health came out during the churning of the milky ocean by the gods and the demons. So, this day is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantri.
Another belief says that Goddess Lakshmi also came out of the milky ocean on this day. So this day is dedicated to the worship of goddess Lakshmi and Kuber.
In north India, people believe that dhanteras is a day dedicated to honour Yamraj who is the God of death. People light 13 diyas to show respect to the God of Death so that he can bless us with a peaceful and painless farewell. They also seek his blessings to ward off any untimely farewell of any family member.
This year Dhanteras falls on Saturday 22 October.
The puja muhurat is 7:31pm to 8:36pm
Kindly Note : There will be a certain time difference depending on the geographical location. The above time is for Pune (IST)
