Bhai dooj, in Maharashtra it is called bhau beej, is a celebration of the sweet bond between a brother and a sister. On this day, both of them exchange gifts as a token of love and care.
Bhai means brother and dooj or dwitiya means second. It falls on the 2nd day of the waxing phases of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik so it is called Bhai dooj. Bhai dooj or Bhratri Dwitiya is celebrated to protect the brother from torture of the death God Yama.
In ancient times, the God of Death, Yamaraja visited his sister Yamuna on this day. She welcomed him with Aarti, tilak, and prepared special dishes for him. Overwhelmed by his sister's affectionate gesture, he gave a boon to mankind that whoever will visit his sister on this day won't be punished by him.
Most people celebrate this day by visiting each other and cooking various delicacies. Girls do aarti and put tilak on the foreheads of their brothers. Then they exchange gifts and sweets. Bhai dooj is a day to socialise and revive the bond of siblings and cousins.
