"Vishwakarma Puja"- Honoring the Divine Architect and Celebrating Craftsmanship in Modern Times

Introduction:

"Vishwakarma Puja" is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect, engineer, and craftsman. Depending on the lunar calendar, it falls on the last day of the Bengali month 'Bhadra', i.e. August/ September. This year, we are commemorating "Vishwakarma Puja" on the '16th of September ‘24.'

This annual celebration of "Vishwakarma Puja" pays homage to the creator of the world, Lord Vishwakarma, who is believed to have designed the celestial abodes of the gods and crafted the most splendid creations on Earth.

Lord Vishwakarma- The Divine Architect and Creator of the Universe Across the Ages:

'Lord Vishwakarma' is also considered as the son of Lord Brahma. 'Varaha Purana' also states that Vishwakarma was founded on the Earth for the well-being of people by Lord Brahma.

Basically, he is the 'divine architect' of the whole universe. The Hindu shastras and ancient books related to astrology also mention about the whole world's development by Lord Vishwakarma himself. The origins of the same can be traced back to the other ancient Hindu Shastras, including the Rigveda and the Mahabharata, where Lord Vishwakarma is revered as the divine architect and artisan.

He is the one who is credited with the creation of the three-fold universe. This includes the divine realms with their celestial kingdoms and planets, the earthly realm with its various worlds, and the celestial abodes along with other mystical realms. Lord Vishwakarma's architectural prowess is said to have given birth to remarkable structures throughout different ages.

In the Satya Yuga, he is believed to have constructed Swarga (Heaven), a celestial paradise. During the Treta Yuga, his craftsmanship extended to the creation of the resplendent Sone ki Lanka. The city of Dwarka, which served as the capital during the Dwapara Yuga in Lord Krishna's era, is another testament to his architectural excellence. The Mahasabha of Pandavas was also created by him. In addition to these, Lord Vishwakarma is revered for crafting numerous other marvels of architecture that continue to awe and inspire to this day.

Lord Vishwakarma created special carts and weapons for the gods, each with their unique divine powers. He also shared knowledge about various industries, which helped society make advancements. 

Rituals & Observances of “Vishwakarma Puja”:

In honor to Lord Vishwakarma as the base of craftsmanship and the whole architecture, a special day has been reserved for him, i.e. 'Vishwakarma Puja.' In many Indian states like Orissa, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Tripura, this day is known by the name "Biswakarma Puja." The term 'Biswakarma' stands for "everything in this universe (Bishwa/ Vishwa) depends on our deeds (Karma). Our deeds and karmas on this Earth decide our present and future.

Other than this, the auspicious occasion of "Vishwakarma Puja" is also famous by the names "Kanya Sankranti", "Sankranti Bhadra" & "Kanya Sankramanam."

In the southern state of Kerala, "Vishwakarma Puja" is celebrated on 'Rishi Panchami.' And in certain parts like Bihar & some northern states, it is observed after Diwali.

"Vishwakarma Puja" is considered as the biggest and the most favourable day for all the workers (basically craftsmen) worldwide. Devotees begin the day by installing idols or images of 'Lord Vishwakarma' in their workplaces, factories, workshops, and offices. These idols are often adorned with flowers, garlands, and other decorative items. Various offerings are made to Lord Vishwakarma, including flowers, fruits, sweets, and traditional delicacies.
